There's nothing like breast milk for a premature baby. Breastfeeding is the best way to provide premature babies with nutritional, immunological and emotional support.
The Canadian Pediatric Society maintains that breastfeeding a premature newborn with breast milk can shorten the baby's stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. Breastfeeding contributes to the health and development of premature babies, as well as helping to prevent the risk of illness and infection.
Discover the benefits of breast milk and advice from our expert on breastfeeding premature babies (video only avalaible in French). Mélissa Savaria is an IBCLC nurse and certified lactation consultant in neonatology at CHU Sainte-Justine.
From 16 weeks of pregnancy, the mother's breasts begin to produce colostrum. This first mother's milk plays an essential role in developing the immune system, thanks to the white blood cells that neutralize bacteria and viruses. It helps protect the immature stomach and respiratory system and prevent health complications, particularly for premature babies.
Within 4 to 6 weeks of a baby's premature birth, the mother produces milk specially designed for the baby's greater needs. This breast milk has higher concentrations of calories, fat, protein, sodium, potassium, iron and magnesium. And that's not all: breast milk alone contains all the nutrients needed for a baby's growth up to 6 months.
Breastfeeding, whether by offering breast milk or expressing breast milk with a breast pump, plays a decisive role in developing the attachment bond between mother and baby. Breastfeeding generates a strong sense of trust and contributes to adequately developing those parts of the brain linked to emotional and social functions and the child's long-term psychological health.

IBCLC lactation consultants are health professionals who have met the eligibility requirements and completed an international examination. They have the skills and knowledge to provide quality breastfeeding assistance to babies and mothers. They work in hospitals, CLSCs, community organizations, pharmacies, specialized breastfeeding clinics, and private clinics and make home visits.
Since 2014, Héma-Québec has set up a public mothers' milk bank to provide milk to a specific group of premature babies. Indeed, some women who overproduced breast milk agreed to donate it to Héma-Québec. These women complete a detailed questionnaire and agree to have blood samples taken. Their breast milk is analyzed and pasteurized, making it safe.
