Support for Dads

Dear Dad,

The birth of a premature baby is also a great challenge for the parents. The first few days are very intense, and it is normal for you to be overwhelmed by the events.

During this period, you may have feelings of helplessness and anxiety. You may question yourself about your role towards your baby and your partner. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal.

From the first moment of life, your presence can contribute positively to your baby and your partner well-being. Often after birth, the father is the first person at baby's bedside and, by the same token, the first tangible link between the child and his mother.

Every moment spent with your preemie counts.

  • Your presence can be manifested in many ways:
  • By your voice, when you speak to him;
  • By your touch, when you express your care;
  • By your participation in daily care routine;
  • And many other ways.

During the first few days, your partner may feel tired and sore, and she may have difficulty moving around due to the birth. You can be there to support, reassure and listen to your partner. By supporting your partner, you are also supporting your baby.

Aside for this difficult ordeal, life continue. When you are not with your family, your role as a father remains essential. Whether it is to the care for your other children, to transfer information to family members, to participate and support the inherent tasks of family life and many other obligations.

For you to be fully available, it is important not to forget yourself. This means taking time for yourself as well. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, to continue to eat well and get enough rest are crucial to your well-being.

Although time is very precious, it is essential to set aside periods of time to help release stress and anxiety. Playing sports, listening to music, reading, or taking up other hobbies can be beneficial to recharge your batteries and be more eager to be present and available for your family.

Remember that it is important to ask for help when necessary. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor for professional support if you need help through this complex and emotional time.
