Breast Pump Loan & Rental

Providing Life-Saving Breast Milk for Your Baby

Feeding a premature baby with breast milk supports their health and development while reducing the risk of specific diseases and infections.

To boost milk production in the first few weeks after birth, using hospital-grade breast pump is highly recommended. While neonatal units provide these for families, they often cannot be used outside the department.

To overcome this hurdle and give preemies the best chance to benefit from their mother’s milk, Préma-Québec provides hospital-grade breast pumps loan and rental.

Free Breast Pump Loans (TLPP Program)

Available at Select Hospitals

Our Breast Pumps for Preemies (TLPP) program provides a free hospital-grade pump loan from birth until hospital discharge. Currently, this program is available exclusively at these four hospitals:

  • Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (Montreal)
  • Sherbrooke University Hospital Center (Sherbrooke)
  • Hôpital Pierre-Boucher (Longueuil)
  • Hôpital de Rouyn-Noranda (Rouyn-Noranda)

If you give birth at one of these locations and meet eligibility criteria:

  • You will be automatically admitted to the TLPP program.
  • Neonatal staff will provide the pump and all necessary instructional materials.
  • You keep the pump until discharge, even if your baby is transferred to another unit.

Why Our Program Makes a Difference

Unlike the breast pumps provided by neonatal units, Préma-Québec’s hospital-grade breast pumps are fully portable and can be used outside the hospital. This flexibility is a game-changer for mothers who need to express milk multiple times a day. Furthermore, if a baby is transferred to a different unit, the mother keeps the loaned pump. The result? More efficient milk production and a maximum supply of breast milk to support the baby's recovery.

A Positive Impact Proven by Research

A study conducted in collaboration with CHU Sainte-Justine and the Université de Montréal confirms the effectiveness of our initiative. Our Breast Pumps for Preemies (TLPP) program gives babies the best possible chance of receiving their mother's life-saving milk.

  • 9 out of 10 mothers state that the program allowed them to provide a larger quantity of breast milk to their baby.
  • 83% of mothers believe the program enabled them to provide breast milk more frequently.
  • More than one-third of mothers who benefited from the program confirmed they would not have purchased or rented a breast pump if it had not been loaned to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Préma-Québec is currently preparing to implement the Breast Pumps for Preemies (TLPP) program in four additional neonatal units. Expanding this program is a top priority for our organization, and our team is eager to ensure that as many premature babies across the province as possible can benefit from it.

The return procedure is explained to parents at the time the loan begins. There are three convenient options for returning a breast pump:

  • On-site: Drop it off at the neonatal unit where your baby was discharged.
  • By mail: Return it to the Préma-Québec office via mail (at no cost to you).
  • In person: Bring it directly to our office in Longueuil.
